Grass-fed. Pasture-raised. Certified Organic.

Since the beginning, animals have been at the core of The Grey Barn. From majestic dairy cows to rumbling pigs to ducks squawking their way across the fields, every animal makes up an integral part of the farm ecosystem. We raise and feed our animals as they’re intended to be raised and fed. Our pigs rotate through ten acres of dedicated woodland that stay clean and robust year round. Our cows are grass-fed from locally cut organic hay, and they’re pastured in the summer on 75 acres of dedicated hay field.

Our chickens live in a dedicated chicken house. They have full outdoor access year round to roam all across the farm. We use to keep them on the move out in the pastures with our cows. We did love this system and so did the hawks. Unfortunately due to severe hunting of predators our organic certifiers asked us to move them inside. They are happy little creatures and you will be glad to know that they do roam everywhere and now that they are not out in a wide open pasture the hawk pressure has subsided.

Working in concert, the animals together keep the land healthy and the farm moving forward in our continued dedication to sustainable farming practices.. We work with a number of heritage breed animals, like Dutch-Belted cattle and Gloucestershire Old-Spot pigs, doing our part to keep American farming genetically diverse. Our USDA organic certification ensures that we don’t use growth hormones and antibiotics: It’s crucial to our farm’s ethos that our practices give back to our land and to our animals, not extract from them.

It’s been our goal since day one to give our animals free, clean, and happy lives – to treat our animals humanely. Their lives allow us to live our lives. We work with Baystate Organic Certifiers to ensure our organic practice. If you’re interested in organic certification, be sure to visit their website for great resources on organic foods open to the general public.
